What is domain tasting?
If you have no idea of what domain tasting is then have a look at this wikipedia article.
Basically domain tasting covers the action of deleting a registered domain within a five day window which was opened by ICANN to allow registrars to delete erroneous or fraudulent registrations. Some registrars commercially use this practice to allow their customers to "try a domain out" before committing to the yearly payment.
What can you use Domain Tasting for?
Mainly for seeking out expired domains with traffic. For example, if you have found a few expired .cc domains you can reg them and point the nameservers towards your own hosting or a parking service. After 3-4 days you can determine if any of them have traffic and delete any that dont. This can be a great way of snagging up potential parking earners, just remember that some of these ccTLDs are more expensive than the top TLDs.
Domain tasting in the top TLDs
Domain tasting in the top TLDs have recently seen significant fee increases and strict limits on the percentage of allowed deletions enforced by ICANN. In July 2008 ICANN implemented a 0.20$ fee on all registered domains deleted or not and also limited a registrars deletions to 10% of their daily registrations. At the end of March 2009 these rules where further tightened effectively making bulk domain tasting unfeasible. Private investors can still attempt domain tasting but the fees imposed on the top TLDs can be between 1-3$.
Domain tasting in ccTLDs
But for people wanting to try out true domain tasting another option still exists. Domain tasting in ccTLDs. Many ccTLD registries allow registrars a fee free deletion window. The period varies depending on ccTLD and depending on which registrar you chose there can also be a fee involved. I will show you a nice option for a few ccTLDs.
At Dynadot.com they still alow domain tasting, the top TLDs are subject to a fee but a few ccTLDs are still completely free to taste. You can see the deletion window and fee details on this page.
